So here we are, a few days after my first SPACE recap – and I’m back with some more traded treasures!
Again, from Top Left:
Various Contributors -The Kindlin’ Quarterly, Numbers 1&2 – A quarterly compilation that is difficult to pin down, but entertaining nonetheless. The best description I can offer is that it is a collection of sometimes absurd, sometimes heartfelt, sometimes humorous writing and comics, provided by freelance contributors and compiled by Editor in Chief M. Young (who also contributes!). Some of my favorite bits are ‘Woodgrain Nudies’ by M. Young (#1),’The Haircut/The Change’ by M. Young (#1/2), ‘Senior Citizen Texting’ by M. Young (#1), ‘Seeing is Believing’ by K. Rose (#2), and ‘Raising Hell’ by William Wallace (#2). To check out more, or to submit, go to facebook.com/thekindlinquarterly.
Brady Dale Russell – Eat The Babies: SPACE 2011 Preview – Brady traded me this book because he saw ‘Wall Street Cat’, and thought that I also might be writing comics with economic themes. I was disappointed to have to tell him what “Wall Street Cat” is actually about, because it would be a pretty cool coincidence. Nonetheless, I was entertained by ‘Eat The Babies’. The strips all revolve around an intelligent, yet often jerky TV set that walks and talks, and often discusses politics and the absurdities of our world. Go to eatthebabies.com for more info and angsty TV’s!
Various Contributors – Big Sexy - This was a trade I shared with table mate Steve from our pal Morgan, who has a story featured in this ‘sex positive’ (Morgan’s pitch!) adult comic compilation put together by Offshore Comix. A peek into the world of sex & sexuality from many perspectives, ‘Big Sexy’ is a fun & interesting exploration of the different, entertaining, and emotional ways that sex fits into our lives. Some highlights include – ‘Song of Songs’ by Bryan Stone, ‘Kitty vs. Kitty’ by Rachel Dukes, ‘Galatea Cup’ by Morgan Pielli, ‘Public Service Announcement’ by Colin Tedford, and ‘I’m Going to Name It’ by Tim Hulsizer. This list was hard to make, because nearly all of “Big Sexy” is fantastic, right down to the awesome cover by Colleen Frakes! To purchase “Big Sexy”, head to offshorecomix.com.
Various Contributors – Candy or Medicine, Vol. 11 – ‘Candy or Medicine’ is a neat little quarterly that has a real mixture of styles. Sort of like a comix blender, organizer Josh Blair puts together an interesting mash of subjects and artwork to make a neat little series worth reading. I was particularly taken by this issues cover by Sam Spina, which looks like the most friendly aliens to ever burst from a man’s chest! To purchase issues or contribute, go to candyormedicine.com.
Ryan Dow – Weekends with Carl: First Weekend & Best Friends Forever- I was pretty excited to read this, because I also have a character named Carl, and it lived up to my excitement! ‘Weekends with Carl’ is an interesting examination of a budding friendship between two co-workers. The writing really captures both the joys and the awkwardness of making new friends, and the entangling of personal lives that inevitably comes with it. The simple style works well, and is fun to look at. I’m really looking forward to reading more of Ryan’s books, and finding out how Ryan & Carl’s friendship story continues! Go to RyanDow.com to check out & purchase Ryan’s work!
(Note – Ryan actually sent me a link to the last chapters of ‘Weekends With Carl’! I don’t want to give too much away, but what a great relatable, yet personal story! It definitely exceeded my expectations, and I was surprised where the story went. You can read it from the beginning here: ‘Weekends With Carl’ by Ryan Dow.)
Coming Up – I’ve got one more SPACE update to go! Yeah!

Thanks, Sara, I’m glad you liked Big Sexy! I wish I could have made it out to SPACE again, but I’m glad Morgan did, anyway.
Your welcome! SPACE was a lot of fun – a great kick-off to hopefully an awesome convention year! Attending any of the upcoming shows?
Yeah, so far we’re tabling at Paint & Pixel, a FCBD festival, and MECAF, but hopefully we’ll pick up some other events. I might drop by the 2nd day of MoCCA as an attendee, but haven’t decided yet.
Wow, thanks so much for the link! You’re awesome! Glad you found TV entertaining. He does have a confusing personality, doesn’t he? It may be because so much confuses him.
I did a write up of the show for The Comics Beat that you might dig: http://www.comicsbeat.com/2011/03/24/s-p-a-c-e-2011-the-jam-show/
Great to meet you! I have read your book. I should do a post like this on my own site, huh? OK, you’ve got me moving on it. Give me a couple days though, probably.
Your welcome! Good to hear you had a good time at SPACE & sold some stuff!! (saw the ‘Beat!). TV’s a unique guy, but I guess that’s what makes him interesting – also, any discussion or economics in comics (JMK – Phone-man!) is a-ok with me – I’d love to have finance explained to me by those two!
Hi, Sara. Nice meeting you at SPACE. Thanks for the review!
Nice meeting you too! I may be submitting to Candy or Medicine soon (once I get to a few short stories I’ve been meaning to do)!
